Luke
“Cool Hand Luke is a 14-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse.
“Before becoming a patient at Veterinary Dermatology of Richmond, summers were miserable for Luke. For the two years prior to his allergy testing and subsequent medication, Luke had sores on his rump, his tail and under his mane, and he rubbed off a lot of his tail and mane hair. He was very itchy and uncomfortable all over. He was on a very high dosage of steroids and was still scratching. In addition, having a 950 pound horse rub on things can be disastrous! In trying to scratch his rump, he knocked over our free-standing hay manager twice, and I was very concerned that Luke was going to injure himself or one of our other horses.
“Since he has been on the regular regime of allergy shots, all of his symptoms have decreased significantly. He has no sores on his rump, or under his mane, and although he can still get a little itchy, it can be controlled with his allergy shots and a daily dose of an antihistamine. Dr. Williamson and my regular equine vet both feel that this will continue to improve as we proceed with the treatment, and that next summer Luke will be even more comfortable and symptom free.
